All About Leigh-on-Sea Striders
Founded in 2002 Leigh-on-Sea Striders objectives were clear from the off – to establish a friendly informal club that welcomed and served all abilities of runner from the very beginner to the elite athlete.
The same year saw the club become affiliated to UK Athletics and establish it’s committee. These volunteers were passionate about the club and wanted it to thrive in road race and cross country running as well as the all important social side of the club. Although many of the faces have changed since the beginning, our current committee are just as passionate and dedicated.
In 2003 LoSS entered the Mid Essex XC league for the first time and took on the commitment of hosting a league fixture. Some 10 years later we are still part of this competition and the 2013-2014 season saw both the mens and ladies teams finish as Champions in their respective leagues. For the ladies this was the 5th year running that they have finished as winners.
Autumn 2009 saw us host the inaugural Leigh-on-Sea 10k with 350 entrants. As the popularity of this event has grown year on year we have increased to 600 participants and have sold out every year to date. This race has received numerous plaudits and was voted for by runners as the 2013 Essex Road Race of the year. Through this event we have also been able to donate almost £10,000 to local charities so far.
The club now has over 250 affiliated members, and even though membership has grown and success has been abundant, the club maintains it’s values and ethos of being the friendly welcoming club it was back in the very beginning.
